To start off, I must mention the condition of the book, as received by the seller. The book arrived sooner than expected, and was in much better condition than I imagined. It had hardly aged at all; in fact, despite some slight yellowing of the pages, it looked almost new. I suspect it sat in a private library, unread and unloved, among a group of books bought by the yard.

The book itself is a study of contrasts. One must get accustomed to Mr. Fletcher's verbose, turgid style before he gets to the meat of the matter--not an easy task for the uninitiated. As to the subject itself, it advocates the idea of "Fletcherism", which, in turn, advocates the students' "waiting until he's good and hungry" before eating anything, and then chewing each bite 20-150 times, until it's thoroughly liquified, swallowing that liquid, and then spitting out any nascent hard, indigestible matter that might be left. Does it work? After some preliminary experimenting, I can attest that it does, but it reduces meals to an exercise of tedium and boredom.

A note should be made about the layout of the book. The interesting matter is limited to the first third of the book. This part of the book contains all the proof that the reader might need that Fletcherism might work, in addition to possibly the only somewhat complete account of the eating patterns of the renowned 14th century sage Luigi Cornaro, who lived to 102 eating only 12oz of solid matter each day.

The second two-thirds of the book, which contain the results of arcane scientific experiments, are of interest only to purists.
